If you are on Medicare and you have diabetes, it may be possible for you to receive financial assistance with obtaining the diabetic testing supplies you require.  Even if you do not need to take insulin, there are many regular expenses associated with properly caring for diabetes.  Therefore, you want to be certain to receive as much assistance with paying for these supplies as possible.Diabetic Testing Supplies

So how do you know if your qualify for Medicare Diabetic Testing Supplies? In order to receive assistance with paying for your diabetic supplies there are a few criteria that must be met.

Basic Requirements for Qualifying for Diabetic Supplies

In order to obtain diabetic supplies through Medicare, you must first obtain a doctor’s order.  A doctor’s order is similar to a prescription in that it must be completed by your physician and must be written on a special form.

In order to be valid, a doctor’s order must include information regarding the diabetes supplies you need as well as your doctor’s signature and the date the order was completed.  It may also contain other relevant information, such as how frequently you are supposed to test your blood glucose level each day.

If you are purchasing your diabetic supplies through a Medicare-enrolled supplier, you will need to submit the doctor’s order to the supplier and this information will be kept on file.  The supplier will then submit your claim to Medicare on your behalf.  It is important to note that you cannot submit the claim yourself and you should not pay for any supplies that you or your designated caregiver did not authorize.

Obtaining Additional Diabetic Supplies

When it comes to receiving reimbursement for diabetic testing supplies from Medicare, it is important to note that there are certain limitations placed on the number test strips and lancets you can receive.

If your doctor feels you need more testing supplies than what is covered, he can indicate a need for additional testing supplies when completing the doctor’s orders.  This does not necessarily guarantee, however, that you will receive the additional supplies.

In order to qualify for additional testing supplies, you must meet a couple of criteria.

First, you must have seen your physician sometime during the past six months, during which time the physician must have conducted an evaluation of your diabetes control.  Second, the physician must document specific reasons for requiring the additional testing equipment and this documentation must be included in your medical records.  You may also need to maintain a testing log book in which you document your test results.

In this case, you will need to provide your supplier with a copy of one month’s worth of test results every six months.

Medicare Paid Diabetic Supplies

by Lucas Brooks on June 30, 2009

Do you suffer from diabetes? If so, you likely have a number of questions regarding Medicare and how the program can help you pay for your diabetic supplies. After all, paying for insulin and diabetic testing supplies can become quite costly, so you need as much help as you can get.

Fortunately, Medicare does provide a great deal of assistance to those who are suffering from diabetes - and here’s a look at some of the things you need to know about this program.

Keeping Your Expenses to a Minimum

For most diabetes patients, Medicare will cover about 80% of the costs associated with the purchase of diabetes testing supplies. You will, however, need to meet your deductible before you qualify for this assistance. Currently, the deductible established by Medicare is $135. If you have a supplemental insurance plan in place, it may cover the cost of your deductible as well as the remaining 20% that Medicare does not cover.

There are several different types of diabetic supplies that are covered by Medicare. These include:

  • Blood glucose test strips
  • Blood glucose monitors
  • Lancets and lancet devices
  • Glucose control solutions used to check the accuracy of monitors and test strips
  • Insulin pump supplies

When you order your supplies from a diabetic supplies company that accepts Medicare payments, you will not have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses aside from the deductible and co-payment. This includes delivery costs, as you should not be charged delivery expenses when you order your supplies in this way.

Make the Process Simple

In addition to helping to significantly reduce the cost associated with purchasing your diabetic supplies, there are other benefits associated with purchasing Medicare paid diabetic supplies. The greatest benefit is the convenience that it offers. Not only will your supplies be delivered directly to your home, the diabetic supply company also bills Medicare for you so you don’t have to worry about getting the paperwork in proper order and you don’t have to pay for your supplies and then wait for reimbursement.

When you work with a diabetic supply company, it will also provide you with reminders when it is time to order more supplies. This way, you will be certain to have all of the supplies you need to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.

If you suffer from diabetes, there is no reason for you to pay more than necessary for your medication and testing supplies. With the help of Medicare and a reputable diabetic supply company, you will save money while being certain to have the supplies you need.
